Widely recognized as a community of educational excellence, Montevallo is the only community in Shelby County and one of only a few in Alabama with preschool through graduate school educational institutions all within walking distance of one another. Our city has multiple preschools, one housed on the University of Montevallo campus. Our elementary, middle and high schools all proudly remain a part of the Shelby County School System. The University of Montevallo is the only public liberal arts colleges in Alabama and one of only 30 in the United States.
As impressive as our traditional educational offerings are, our non-traditional educational offerings remain shining jewels in our crown. Montevallo is home to American Village, a nationally-pioneering classroom and American history and civics education center as well as David Mathews Center for Civic Life. The University of Montevallo campus features Ebenezer Swamp, the James Wylie Shepherd Observatory and the only undergraduate-fired Anagama Kiln in the United States. All of these treasures are open to the public.
