Traffic will be congested throughout downtown for the next week or so due to paving along Main Street. Fortunately, the contractors have been able to make significant progress this week while the public schools were closed for the Thanksgiving Day break. Paving along the Main Street roadway will be finished today (Wednesday). However, the parking areas along Main Street will be paved next week, weather permitting. Again, depending on the weather, all paving should be completed before the Christmas Parade on Thursday. In the meantime, please remain patient as the crews finish their work. During this time, we also hope to see the sidewalks at the eight remaining corners poured. This is a top priority. Here again, if the weather cooperates, we expect the crosswalk markings will be started in a couple of weeks. This will require streets to be one lane only while the work in being done.Paving along Highway 155 (Middle Street) from the bridge to Main Street will begin as soon as Main Street paving is complete. This is a separate project with ALDOT, not related to the Streetscape.Handrails will not be installed until closer to the end of the Streetscape project. So, continue to use caution when walking through downtown.
