Meet the Mayor

Dear Montevallo:

Montevallo is an intentionally distinctive small town that embraces a culture of community, respect, and innovation. It is truly a pleasure to be a part of such an amazing community with neighbors who love and care for one another. In my time involved with Montevallo's city government, first as a city council member and now as the mayor, we have come together to oversee many projects that have made our city what it is today.

I initially ran for a seat on the City Council because I wanted to see some form of recycling in Montevallo. We partnered with Alabama Power and we now have the Montevallo Recycling Center, which has very recently gotten a face lift. From this partnership and others that followed, we learned a lot about partnerships over the last decade or so. As a result, we have seen the downtown area revitalized; first with our designation as a Main Street Community, and then with the five million-dollar streetscape project. We have seen our youth grow into a vital part of the city government structure with the formation of the Montevallo Junior City Council. And we have seen our city become a "leaderful" community with volunteers paving our road to success. The city that started from humble beginnings is now being recognized on both the state and national level for the successes we're experiencing.

But even with our plentiful successes, we still have work to do. In the coming years, we plan to share the love shown to our downtown area. We are looking to make the city more walkable by connecting the downtown area to Highway 25. We are also working to develop an appropriate boulevard-style streetscape for the area. In addition to infrastructure improvements, I am excited to let you know that we are working on promoting Montevallo as a tourist destination. Montevallo Main Street is working to develop an ecotourism program, and the city is actively courting a hotel.

As I stated, we still have a lot of work to do. I have every confidence that the dream team we have in place will be successful in implementing the vision that our citizens have presented. And please remember, there is always room for one more. If you would like to be a part of forging this pathway to an even brighter future for all, please reach out to us at city hall. Many thanks to those of you who are putting your heart into our city. It is an honor and a privilege to serve as your mayor.

Respectfully,

Hollie C. Cost, Ph.D.
Mayor, City of Montevallo
